from the Wooster Oilers website...kinda puts things in perspective.. us with all our problems...
There is no way to sugar coat what the situation is with Oilers defenceman Corey McDevitt....his cancer that was originally diagnosed in March of this year.... has returned.
Towards the end of last season Corey was diagnosed with testicular cancer, at the age of 19. He underwent surgery to have the tumor removed, and in the following months had regular bloodtests that would detect an elevated level of cancerous cells. The news was not good a few weeks ago. Tests confirmed that the cancer had returned.
This week Corey began a series of very aggressive chemo treatments to try and stop this horrible disease in it's tracks. He has not been alone, as his family and girlfriend Jess has been by his side for the 6 to 7 hour daily treatments at the Cleveland Clinic in Wooster.
Coach Hart Duddy has been fielding calls and e-mails from Corey's Oiler teammates wanting updates on his progress and condition.
In Corey's words.." Cancer has picked the wrong guy to mess with this time... I am going to fight and win...I have no doubt in my mind, I will be on the ice this season with my team"
" I think he is 100% right" Coach Hart added. " He is very determined to fight and beat this thing...after a 7 hour chemo treatment on Wednesday, he went to the rink and skated 7 or 8 laps.....now THAT is determination! " the coach said.
A hero of sorts has risen to help Corey also....Lance Armstrong, who also had the same form of cancer a few years ago and won his battle. Corey has been reading about Lance and is a huge supporter of his " Live Strong" foundation.
Corey has a lot of support from the community and the Oilers organization. " He knows he is not alone in this battle" Coach Hart explained, " His teammates and his friends and an entire community are fighting with him"
Anyone that wishes to send words of encouragement or thoughts and prayers to Corey, please feel free to send cards to the Alice Noble Ice Arena 851 Oldman Rd Wooster Ohio 44691 or send an e-mail to coachhart@nc.rr.com and they will be given to Corey.
In the short term, look for Corey around the Alice Noble rink or on the bench with Coach Hart at the beginning of the season in September.....then we can look for him on the blueline!!!
