It was announced today that the Southern Minnesota Express would be moving to Metro Detroit as has been rumored for quite a long time. Any guesses where they may move the team to? My first thought would be the Taylor Sportsplex in Taylor, a "downriver" community south of the city. There are two sheets of ice and the larger one seats approx. 1000. Any other thoughts?

The team is going to Brownstown. They looked at Taylor, but it apparently has mold issues.

We were talking to a couple of the SM fans last weekend and they said they had some local businessmen interested in either buying the Express or bringing in an Expansion team to Owatanna. Maybe the Fargo Franchise, seeing as the owners live in Minneapolis anyway? What would the chances of this happening be?

I'd say pretty darn good that Fargo lands in Owatonna...

I was thinking that would be the best option for the Fargo Franchise, the City of Owatonna and the NAHL.

Marc, You had a quick reply to my question regarding where the Express is moving to, so I thought you might have some idea for these follow up questions. First, do you know why Brownstown? I have been to nearly every hockey venue in the Detroit area, but I can't say I have ever visited the Ice Box. Do you know its seating capacity? How much of an impact does seating capacity have on choosing a site to place a Junior A Tier II team? Also, is anyone aware if Eddie Edgar Arena in Livonia has ever been a consideration for a junior team. The arena does hold 1200, (about the same as several other junior rinks), but Livonia has a GREAT reputation for being the home of outstanding hockey players...NHL- Mike Modano (really from Westland but attended Livonia Schools), Dave Moss, Ryan Kesler and NCAA- Jeff and Bryan Lerg, Krug brothers, Eric Condra, Mark Mitera, Brandon Naurato and several others.

While I am familiar with the efforts the Express ownership made in finding a new home, I had been out of the loop for several weeks when the decision was made and do not know why Brownstown was selected.
