Dec 11, 2007 Eagles Sign Adam Larrabee from the University Massachusetts-Boston
Varkaus, Finland – The Varkaus Eagles today announced the signing of Adam J. Larrabee from the University of Massachusetts-Boston. Adam is the leading scorer for the Beacons Hockey Club with 5 goal, 6 assists for 11 points in 8 games. Larrabee will add size and strength to the Eagles roster.
"I very excited to add a player who has a strong work ethic " said Keith McAdams, head coach of the Varkaus Eagles team. The Eagles need more players like Larrabee who will work hard on offense and defense. Adam has been a strong leader and a scorer on every club he has played on."
There has been lot of interest from players who are playing Division Three college Hockey " said Jimmy Betts, assistant coach of the Varkaus Eagles team. I believe the trend will increase over time and more players will leave division three college in the states and join the program. The Eagles players all have opportunity to go to school free and play hockey at a similar or better level."
The Eagles will be moving to the promotion series in Suomi-Sarja League (Division I) Starting in January.

How do the colleges there relate to the quality of US DIII schools? Generally, US DIII shcools are exceptional academically and I would be concerned about giving up that quality just to get a "free" education in Finland.
What are the requirements as it applies to the "free" education? For example, does 1 season played = 1 year of schooling?

The school in Finland where the team goes was rated 2750 in the world. The Education is top rate, but demanding.
We are looking for players who would be impact player at the D3 level or who are a top Junior player.
Every player get a chance to go to school. But it up to the players to perform in the class room. Players need to get into the degree program by year three. Players can enter the degree program by passing the exam. If they are in school in Finland, the test is on the material they studied. The classes and test are in English.
Players coming to the team should be coming to get a education.
In the degree program the players need to attend school 11 months.

Thanks for the info. Some follow up questions:
What school is it?
How does a player earn his education $$$? In the OHL for example, they earn dollars based on how long they play for a team. Is it similar there?

You can find everything about the school @ www.varkauseagles.com/ under program. The school information will be updated in next few weeks. Schooling is guaranteed by the team as long as the player plays for the club. If a player is cut, he would need to pay for his apartment but school is guaranteed for 4 yrs. Players need to follow code of conduct outlined in contract or they can be cut at any time. The team has 20 full rides which include school and housing and 10 school, with no housing. Housing cost $300 per month
