Hey Marc, this may be a dumb question, but what is the Karma rating thingy?

Post by Marc Foster on Nov 25, 2007 18:04:47 GMT -5
Karma is something that can be used for measuring reputation. If you say something stupid, other members can click the "smite" link and your karma will go down a point. If you say something brilliant, members can click the "exalt" link, and your karma goes up a point.
Looks like your opening remark about bunnies put you in the hole with your peers.

Oh well, it's not the first and certainly won't be the last, I'd bet. Of course, as I said before, that wasn't my intent. I was just laughing at the avatar.

Well it seems to be improving... he's up to -1 from -2... Think of it like plus/minus. In fact, if I could rename it that, I would...

Hey now, whoever is smiting jt can cool it... I've never been ashamed of my ego, and have been known to joke about it from time to time (I live in Texas because it's the only state that can contain my ego *rimshot*). After all, I'm still the same guy that used to broadcast games in a kilt. Besides, I'm probably going to unveil a new blog & forum logo over or before Christmas, and even before jt said anything I was considering taking my name off the masthead. Still, I've always put my name on things in the online hockey world, going back to 1991 when I started posting on rec.sport.hockey (hey, it used to be that Usenet WAS the internet!). I didn't stop that habit when I joined the TJHN forum, and for the most part, it's worked out okay. In most ways it gives folks a face to go with the name, and I think it's led to more respect within the community. I wouldn't call myself an insider, but I don't think I'd get the information I do get if my online name were say, the Zany Hockey Fella (okay, that was a low blow, but I'm a sucker for low hanging fruit).

Marc, I like ego's. Don't be ashamed. JT is probably just angry at his poor playing Tornado. I don't ever wish kids bad luck, however, that organization has stretched the rules and gotten away with things forever. Time for them to get a dose of humility. JT included.

Nawww, JT and I are on good terms, and as a good company man he's not bagging on the team to badly...
As far as the emoticons go, I think I only get the number (16) you see. I switched out the last six with the ones you see, but left the rest. If I can expand it, I will...

Is there a way to preview the avatars? I notice that "Profile" lets me see a long drop down list of avatars, but only shows them by name, not by image. Is there a trick that I haven't figured out?

If there is I haven't figured it out either. I was thinking of using this thread to load all the avatars so that they can be previewed in one place. You'd still have to right click the image to snag the file name, then flip back to your profile, but it beats having nothing. I'll put that on my to-do list for this weekend.
(Correction: I'll put it on the Avatar Resources thread)
Also, if any of you are seeing ads, I strongly suggest switching to Firefox (which I suggest anyone do anyway). I didn't even know ads were built in to the forum until I happened to pull up the site on my parent's old PC running I.E.

Hey now, whoever is smiting jt can cool it... Yea...tell your mom to stop it, Foster! Actually, I don't mind one bit...goes with the territory. I wouldn't call myself an insider, but I don't think I'd get the information I do get if my online name were say, the Zany Hockey Fella (okay, that was a low blow, but I'm a sucker for low hanging fruit). As my daughter would say, "OH, SNAP!" ;D

Where is everyone.
Has the ice storm taking Marc Foster hostage as well.
We are on our third Ice Storm in London in the last two weeks but we are probably better prepared to deal with them in Ontario.
Hope everyone is all well south , southwest and in the plain states.

Mostly I'm just busy... I get my hour or so early in the morning to get my blog out, then I'm off to work. It's been crazy trying to wrap the semester up here on campus, so I'm getting home late, eating, and crashing.
The ice storm starts a good 100 miles north, but I've got friends from OKC, Topeka, and Missouri that took a good whacking. Most managed to keep their power, however.
Oklahoma's probably looking at 4-8 inches of snow in the next few days, however...

Marc, I think it would be great if you added a "Tryout / Opportunity" section. It would be a great place for things like the Varkaus thread and upcoming team tryouts, etc. Other than that your Blog is the best and this forum is off to a great start!!!!

Thanks for the idea, Walt, but I'm not sure I want to go there. I do offer ad space here and on the blog, and usually do sell space in the spring/summer during camp season, so allowing it here sort of defeats the purpose.

Quick update on the layout, I've added the News Feeds back into the template, again over on the left margin. I forget who I was using before, but the performance was pathetic. I like the look of FeedSweep, which is who I'm going with now. My design options are somewhat limited, but the stock system doesn't clash with the current layout too much.
As for the content in the feed, it's still OurSportsCentral. They cover the three CHL leagues plus the USHL and NAHL.
As some of you may have noticed, last weekend I replaced the standings and league links tables with drop-downs. I also switched the archives, previous posts, and blog tags lists to dropdowns. I probably won't switch the remaining links to dropdowns, however, as those links tend to draw a casual interest and need to remain visible, whereas those using the drop-downs to say, check the BCHL standings, is doing so with a deliberate intent.
The holidays are still young, so I might make some more changes here and there before the start of the spring semester. I'm still pleased overall with the general template though. It's not gone stale on me yet. I'm researching other features I may try to add, so we'll see what happens...

I hear ya. I want to have more original content as well. The problem is that takes time, and I haven't had it recently. You get some editorial commentary with story links now, but yes, I want to do more original work like I have in the past.

Here is my request.
Since so many of you are in the south and Marc is around Dallas/ Fort Worth. Up here in Ontario we are being hammered for two months now on a train track of storms coming from your area.
They are called Texas lows and may seem innocent enough but when they reach the Great Lakes they turn into weather bombs. Another one just finished here last night but wait, oh ya another is forming over Texas this morning with warnings up already from Detroit to Montreal for a Friday/ Saturday hammer job.
Enough Marc turn off the tap please.

Hey, Texas is doing its part in the fight against global warming!!!!!
Funny thing is, we've had a rather mild winter this year.... Until today. Winter storm warning, looking at 4-6 inches of snow here.
I used to question why people in DFW can't drive in winter weather, seeing as how so many of them are northern transplants. Well, it turns out the transplants that came down here couldn't drive in snow and ice up north, either.

Well, it turns out the transplants that came down here couldn't drive in snow and ice up north, either. We train them real well in bad habits before shipping them south. Toronto on Sat/ Sun were reporting a auto wreck every 29 seconds for 36 straight hours. Why not just stay home. Since you have gotten off rather easy this winter Marc your fun is about to start. yes the Tornado season is about to ramp up.

Since you have gotten off rather easy this winter Marc your fun is about to start. yes the Tornado season is about to ramp up. Well, we did get upwards of 8 inches in spots around DFW last week, but only 3-4 at my house (some of which survived in the form of larger snowmen around the neighborhood until we got some serious rain early this morning). Oh well, I'm taking the family camping this weekend, it'll be in the 80s. As far as storm season goes. This La Nina looks a LOT like 1991. 1991 was a very big year for tornadoes, though mostly in OK-KS. I was at meteorology student at OU at the time, and could literally fall out of bed and see one that spring. It wasn't that there were a lot of hoses, it was that the set-up each storm day was textbook. Example, 4/26/91 was a huge day (gave us Andover, KS and the infamous "under the bridge" footage). It was also a Friday. The computer models set it up for us Monday, and kept with it, such that Friday we had all arranged to skip classes and go out that day. We were out the door at 10 AM and the first hose of the day dropped 300-400 yards on the road in front of my car. I only had two busted chases that spring, and both were followed the next day by major chase events. It's not uncommon to get sucked out to the Texas Panhandle, but then the cap never breaks... the next day all hell breaks loose in western/central Oklahoma. I haven't been on a chase in 5 years... but I still get the itch each spring. Then I realize I don't want to be within 200 miles of the idiots who chase on TV...
